Uganda Youth and Women’s Effort Fighting AIDS (UYWEFA) is a member of the Paper for All umbrella. The NGO is believed to meet the conditions of the umbrella.  For more details on the criteria, please see http://www.paper4all.org/umbrella

UYWEFA (uywefavolunteers@gmail.com) is a charitable organization based in Uganda and established in 2007 by people living with HIV/AIDS in Kazo, Wakiso District (LC1 Building, Kazo Central Zone, PO Box 72300, Kampala Clock Towers) after realizing huge gaps in services for HIV/AIDS in the community. It quickly created a program of activities and campaigns designed to promote awareness and sensitization within community.

1- Vision

UYWEFA’s objective is to provide assistance to families who have decided to care for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) by providing a source of free education for these children. Over the first year we aim to provide education for 100 OVCs at early primary stage. Long term we would like to acquire new land to expand the center and employ a fully qualified teacher to assist in the training and development of our local community volunteers.

2- Team and location

We currently have a staff team of five, which consists of a program director; training coordinator; an administrator; and two project volunteers. We aim to expand our staff team for the OVC education center and are currently looking for skilled administrators and teachers to enhance our the current team.

UYWEFA’s program director Ronald Bagenda oversees the planning implementation of all UYWEFA projects. He is a local businessman and a trained teacher so will personally take responsibility for training volunteer teachers. Training coordinator Betty Muyowa is responsible for all project training and specializes in training new HIV counselors and home based care volunteers. Administrator David Cousins is an international volunteer with UYWEFA for one year he is responsible for project coordination, developing systems to record all necessary information. He is an experienced social researcher and takes responsibility for monitoring and evaluation. Our two project volunteers are Peter Kamba, an IT graduate, and Nakayenga Gorette, who has a certificate in nursery teaching.

UYWEFA is located in Kazo Central Zone, LC1 Building just off Kazo Road after Bwaise Town. 3- Impact and needs

The program’s main impact will be on the lives of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) who will receive basic education that previously would have been denied to them. Additionally, there will be positive benefits for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) who will be empowered financially through access to free education, and socially by their involvement in the running of the school. Community volunteers will also benefit through the receipt of a wide range of training that will improve their opportunities in the labor market.

Staff costs are a significant part of our budget as we will need to offer facilitation to our three volunteers which will be 135,000 Ugandan Shillngs per month ($56.84). We would also like a trained teacher to oversee our operations which would cost 200,000 Ugandan Shillings per month ($84.21). Our itemized list of materials needed with costs in US Dollars and Ugandan Shillings is in the table below:

5- How you can help

We are seeking organizations to provide funding and materials for the project in line with the above budget table. Any materials that can be used in early primary education (reading books, coloring pencils, educational games, pens, exercise books etc) would be gratefully received. We are also interested in partnering with other organizations to share experiences and technical expertise, including those who would like to gain some experience by volunteering with our project.

6- Sustainability

We have plans for income-generating activities for the school including a poultry farm and office services. Thus far, we have raised funds for the school from the community and we will continue to collect regular membership contributions.

Alongside the school, the construction of the center will allow us to expand and improve the services we offer to OVCs, people living with HIV/AIDS and the wider community. Literacy classes and vocational training will be provided to OVCs who have dropped out of school as well as evening classes for adults with poor literacy.
